Puntland Welcomes Election of New President of the Federal Republic of Somalia

PRESS RELEASE 11 September 2012 Puntland State of Somalia welcomes the new and historic change that took place  in Mogadishu yesterday and congratulates President-elect His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on his overwhelming victory as President of the first Federal Republic of Somalia.

Puntland shares its congratulations with the Somali people, the new MPs of the Lower House of the Somali Federal Parliament, the Technical Selection Committee, UNPOS and the SRSG and the international partners who have aided Somalia’s political recovery for years. The presidential election in Mogadishu was peaceful, orderly, and transparent and we call on all parties to seize on this moment of renewed hope and optimism in order for Somalia to move towards reconciliation, stability, and reconstruction.

Puntland hopes that the incoming President and the Federal Government of Somalia will build on past achievements towards national governance, mobilize resources, and benefit from the lessons learned. Moreover, it is our hope that the incoming President and Government will fulfill national obligations and complete remaining tasks, in accordance with the Provisional Federal Constitution of Somalia, including a commitment to federalism and the establishment of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament based on state representation.
